Ask a Londoner where they are from and you rarely get "London". You get a borough, a postcode, an ends. Peckham. Tottenham. Brixton. Ilford. Wembley. Croydon. People carry their patch like a badge, and half the fun of this city is the friendly argument about whose ends is best. This one is not a guide to anything in particular. It is just a bit of love for the way London does local.
Everyone is from somewhere
There is a specific London thing where your borough is part of who you are. It shows up in how people talk, who they support, the food they grew up on, the market they know like the back of their hand. Someone from Hackney and someone from Lewisham are both from London, but ask them and they will tell you they are from very different places, and they will both be right.
Postcodes do a lot of the talking. E, N, SE, SW, W, the numbers that follow, they all mean something. People rep their postcode on caps, in songs, in the way they say it. It is shorthand for a whole world of shops, faces and streets you know by heart.
The friendly rivalry
Half of it is banter. North versus south of the river is the oldest one, and nobody is crossing it without a good reason. East versus west has its own flavour. Then there are the borough-level ones: who has the better market, the better food, the better nights out. None of it is serious, and all of it is serious, if you know what I mean.
The truth is every corner of this city has something. The best patty might be in Brixton, the best jollof in Peckham, the best grill on Green Lanes, the best sweets in Southall. You do not have to pick. You just have to know your own patch and be willing to travel for the rest.
What your ends is really about
Strip away the banter and repping your borough is about belonging. It is knowing the shopkeeper by name, the takeaway that does your order without you asking, the barber who has cut your hair since you were a kid, the hall where every family party has been held. That is what local means, and it is worth holding onto as the city changes around it.
